At the material of the Masaryk University Archives the author of the present study explicates from the scholarly point of view extremely significant and prolific fragment from Roman Jakobson’s biography connected with Brno university and the creation of the treatise Wisdom of Old Czechs. Analyzing the three preserved negative evaluations (vota separata) to the works of Roman Jakobson, the authors of which were professors František Chudoba, Antonín Beer, and František Novotný manifesting the influence of the political background upon the personal contacts in the scholarly world since the 1930s. The reactions mentioned above were then followed by the evaluation of the situation in the professors’ council. „The Jakobson Case” uncovers all the complexity and contradiction of the general form of Central Europe, the kernel of which was represented by interwar Czechoslovakia demonstrating the formation of philological methodologies and their reverse sides.References
