In the article the motif of empty sheet in three pieces of poetry by German-speaking authors is analyzed. Poems “Unwritten Sheet” by Rose Auslaender, “Empty Sheet” by Hans Magnus Enzensberger and “white stream” by Helmut Krausser were chosen for interpretation and comparison. The authors represents different periods of the German-language literature, they also have various personally backgrounds. Their poetic texts are the samples of poetological lyrics in which an act of art is thematized. They are a reflection on the creative process of writing as a high complex process of human's activity. The form and style peculiarities, as well as their metaphoric, correlation of names and content are analyzed in detail. Common features of poetic texts under analysis were found both on formal and content levels. All the texts are the samples of modern poetic form free of the “classical” poetic features such as rhyme and metre. In all three pieces of poetry the key themes were outlined. They are as follows: stated by the authors “all-consuming” feature of paper, perception of act of art as a continuous, complex and even painful process and realization of the crucial and difficult task of the author who wants his oeuvre to pass inspection for literary value.
